Word Search
More games to play
Word Search is the classic hidden-word puzzle game, free to play in the browser with no download needed. A grid of letters hides a list of words running in any direction, and your job is to drag across each word to highlight and clear it from the list. It is calm, satisfying, and works at any skill level. You can play at school, at work, or anywhere browser games are not blocked.
What is Word Search?
Word Search presents a rectangular grid packed with letters. Somewhere inside, a curated list of words is hidden, written horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, and sometimes backwards. A panel beside or below the grid shows the words you need to find. When you spot one, you drag from its first letter to its last letter and it gets marked as found. Clear every word on the list to complete the puzzle.
Puzzles usually follow a theme. The word list might be animals, countries, sports, or food, which means you can sometimes predict a word from the theme before you find it visually. Themed grids also make the game a low-key learning tool, not just a search task.
How to find and mark words
All interaction is done with the mouse. Click the first letter of a word, hold, then drag in a straight line to the last letter and release. The game highlights the path as you drag so you can confirm the letters before releasing. On touchscreens, tap-and-drag works the same way.
| Action | How to do it |
|---|---|
| Start a selection | Click the first letter of the word |
| Extend the highlight | Hold and drag in a straight line to the last letter |
| Submit the word | Release the mouse button at the last letter |
| Cancel a selection | Release outside a valid word or move off-grid |
Word directions and grid sizes
Words in the grid can run in eight possible directions. This is what makes Word Search tricky: you cannot just read left-to-right. Grid size also changes between puzzles. Smaller grids (10x10) are quicker and easier to scan; larger grids (15x15 or more) hide words more effectively because there are more decoy letters. Theme and difficulty level together determine how many words you need to find.
| Direction | Example path |
|---|---|
| Left to right | Standard horizontal reading |
| Right to left | Horizontal but reversed |
| Top to bottom | Straight down a column |
| Bottom to top | Straight up a column |
| Diagonal (4 variants) | Any of the four corner-to-corner angles |
Tips for clearing the grid quickly
- Scan for the first letter of each word before tracing the full path. The starting letter is the bottleneck.
- Long words narrow down quickly because they can only run in one or two directions at full length.
- Check backwards spellings early. Players often miss reversed words until the end.
- Unusual letters (Q, X, Z) stand out in the grid and are easy anchors for finding rare words.
- If a word refuses to appear, try reading diagonally. That direction trips people up most.
